Princess Gigi and the real meaning of Christmas

by Sheila Walsh on 11/16/2009 09:11

It’s almost that time of year again! I can’t believe another year has flown by and that Christmas is just around the corner! Christmas at the Walsh house is a big deal as I’m sure it is for you and your family. Decorating several trees…shopping for Christmas presents for my family…Christmas gatherings…cooking for Christmas parties...I have to step back occasionally to remember what the season is all about.

Children know how to keep the true meaning of Christmas joy alive and well. I love watching my son, Christian, as he anxiously awaits every child’s favorite day….Christmas morning! The countdown to Christmas seems to begin earlier every year! I watch as his eyes sparkle with awe and wonder at the beauty this season brings. Through his eyes, I am reminded of God’s words:

When the wise men saw the star, they were filled with joy-Matthew 2:10.

Looking at Christmas through the eyes of a child, I am also reminded of how blessed we are. I receive hundreds of letters from parents about the impact Gigi has had on their child. One of the most touching letters I received recently was from a mom whose daughter has leukemia. This little girl had lost all of her beautiful blonde hair and was struggling with what she saw in the mirror. Her aunt bought her a Gigi book and Bible last Christmas and after her mother read the book to her she asked her mom to paint her room pink. "It doesn't matter what I look like on the outside, God says I am a Princess and he doesn't tell lies."

That little girl has it all figured out! One of the most precious gifts God gives us daily is the gift of unconditional love and acceptance. No matter where we are in life, may we all see that God’s gifts are abundant…not just at Christmas time….but with every single breath we take.

Just as our heavenly Father loves to shower us with His abundant gifts, we as parents love to shower our children with gifts of love. My son is asking for surfing lessons! What do your children want for Christmas this year? In what ways will you shower your children with Christmas love this year?

Through the eyes of a child,

S

 heila Walsh

My 4 year old granddaughter adores the Gigi videos and books. Her daddy is the pastor of a very tiny church, and runs a small home business. My daughter substitue teaches, just to make ends meet. Daddy takes care of her and her 1 year old sister. Gigi has added much excitement and fun to her life. Thanks so much !

My husband and I are showering our girls with peace this Christmas season. We are constantly on the go once school starts and rarely have an opportunity to just sit and be with one another. We will not travel and will take the time to celebrate our Lord's birth with each other. We feel blessed to have each other and grateful for another holiday together. Our little princesses bring us such joy. It has never really mattered what we give them as long as hoilday traditions are upheld. We have too many to list, but they look forward to each and every moment. Our family favorite is our Advent calendar. Each day they open a door in the box and pull out a card that describes a person, animal, or fixture of the Nativity. They then go on a hunt for that piece of the Nativity. The last week is especially exciting, culminating in the girls opening the last piece, Jesus, who is wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying under the tree on Christmas morning. He is the last present they open and they remember that we are celebrating Jesus and that He is the Gift who was worth the wait!

One of the most important lessons a parent can teach their little princess is that its what's on the inside that matters most. Be a princess of strong character, compassion, and love. I am having fun ready and watching Gigi's adventures with my 4 year old and helping to reinforce the lessons being taught.

Sheila, Not an entry, just a clarification. I placed a comment in earlier this week without my name on it...thinking I would enter my name later like on some other blogs and it didn't ask. So, if you see one where the mom mentions that she loves the first movie, that's me. Sorry for the mix up. In Him, Melissa Nesdahl

We love Gigi in our house! Our daughter loves her but we love her because we don't have to worry about her getting a negative or anti-God message in the DVDs. Gigi is WIN-WIN!

My daughter is 6 years old and LOVES to read her Sweet Dreams Princess book before bed. We try to read a couple of nights a week and she's always looking forward to those nights...

I know that she would LOVE another Gigi book!

PS. I enjoyed hearing your testimony at WoF this past weekend in Houston! I was TOTALLY blessed!

We are loving this message! My girls have asked for a lot less this year and when pressed, my 8 year old said she really wanted to visit her cousins in Wisconsin. One had been sick and she wanted to see for herslf that she was better! I am always surprised when little ones remember what's important before we do. Here I am asking what goods they want and instead I am being shown what truly is "GOOD"!

It's been our tradition to allow our 4 kiddos to request only 3 gifts to represent the 3 gifts the Infant Jesus received from the Wise Men. It's worked well and helped them to think about wants vs. needs. My biggest hope is to continue showering the Love of Our Christ on them in tangible and fun ways:) Merry Christmas all.

My daughter wants crafts (and anything pink) and my son wants trains. My husband and I hope to show them that Christmas about God's greatest gift.

Thank you so much for gifting a lucky person with this invaluable set. My 4 yr old understands that princesses aren't far off fairytales, but that she really is one because, as she learned from Gigi and often sings loudly, "God made a princess in me!" My 2 yr old is starting to get it. This series is one for girls of all ages. I love the original movie myself...such a great illustration of God having unique plans for our life. Blessings to you!

Okay - so I left a comment and expected it to ask for my email address or something, but it didn't. So if we win by comment on this blog post how will you contact us? I don't want to put my email address in this comment field but it looks like you have the comments hidden so maybe it is okay. For now I will put my Twitter handle - I am @JoshNelson - maybe you can update the blog post to give us more info on how you will contact us for the prize pack.

We're giving our 5 children the gift of time, time together as a family. This comes out of necessity but I don't feel it's a bad thing. I believe that God puts us in certain circumstances to bring us closer to Him & each other. We'll all realize that even though there aren't a bunch of presents under our tree that we're still very much blessed. We have a home, we have beds, we have food & we have each other when many people have none of these things at all. In the end, stuff is just that-stuff but relationships, love, family & communication can build a foundation of faith, hope & trust. These are the things that will endure.

YEAH for GG. I would love to win the prize. I technically have no children of my own but I have been blessed with 100's of children as I get to hang out with them at work everyday since the 90's (I work in a daycare).

Thank you Sheila for writing the GG books and for letting the love of God shine through.

I love reading Gigi books to my granddaughter, Grace. I told her when she gets to heaven that she will have a crown. She asked if it would be a nice one or one that pokes your head.

Sometimes Christmas becomes all consuming with all the gift giving & receiving. I like to sit my grandchildren (Ashlyn-6 and Landon-4) and explain that God gave us the greatest gift of all when He gave Jesus to us. Although they are young this sparks many questions that beg for discussion about their eternal salvation. I love these times with them when we are talking about Jesus!
