This One Principle Is Changing My Life

“What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.”
Ecclesiastes 1:9

Just ask any songwriter who has tried to come up with a unique way to say, “I love you,” or a mystery writer wanting to disguise the murderer until they choose to reveal them, there are only so many ways to tell a story or communicate a truth.

Having acknowledged that however, what has become clear to me in recent months is that I can know what is true in my head and still not walk it out in my day to day life.
Whether I do or don’t, one thing remains constant. There are certain irrevocable laws that stand whether we align ourselves with them or not…..so to the principle of this piece.

It started with two thoughts converging in my heart at the same time

A Long Obedience In The Same Direction
Play the movie forward

In 1980 Eugene Peterson wrote, ‘A Long Obedience In The Same Direction’. I bought the book because I was intrigued by the title. It described what my life was not. I favored a short obedience in the same direction or a long obedience in differing directions but something about the title grabbed hold of me and would not let go.

Fast forward to 2007 when I had the privilege of speaking in arenas around the nation through ‘Women Of Faith’ with one of my most cherished friends, Dr. Henry Cloud. For thirty weekends I sat and listened to Henry’s brilliance and one phrase tattooed itself to my soul, “Play the movie forward.” The principle is simple, play the movie of your life forward, where do you want to be in one year and what are you doing today to move towards that?

It’s simple
It’s life changing

If you want to be 30 pounds thinner by the summer, what are you doing today to get there?
If you want a greater understanding of God and what he has revealed to us through scripture, what are you doing today to get there?
If you want your children to grow up and make a healthy choice in a husband or wife what are you modeling today that will lead to that?
People often write to me and ask how to get a book published but it never starts there. It starts by getting up everyday and writing, pouring out your heart, deleting half of it and starting again the next day.

So….this is not a new thought but let me ask you, (within the realm of where you have choice) what do you want your life to look like this time next year and what are you willing to do today to step toward that?

It will take a long obedience in the same direction AND it will change your life!

    AMEN to that!

Very powerful insight Sheila….thank you for sharing…I am going to take hold of a long obedience in the same direction AND change my life in many wonderful ways this year…I am also going to get a copy of Eugene Peterson's book and along with Scripture reference my days to His ways….

Sheila this is awesome and so evidently God inspired, as all your writing is. I want so many things this next year and yet I also want to learn to be content with what I have been given after a year of blogging a “journey of healing” I am looking to blog a journey of loving. This year I want to genuinely show someone Gods love every day. That’s what I want to look back and see. Guess its about time I got started. Love u Sheila and hope I have the pleasure of meeting you some day!

Powerful as usual Sheila! I know what my goals are this year. They are as concrete in my head as they are real, yet what am I doing NOW to make them come true? I'm working hard. Growing my readership at my blog. Healthwise I've been forced to make changes due to a recent diagnosis. This will play in my head all year long now, as I remind myself to keep pushing forward!

sheila, you hit the nail right on MY head!!

Thanks for sharing this. I won't forget. Living a focused life is what I do–but love the different terminology. So, I do need to dream bigger and plan not on the basis of what I can do but what He canand will do with Faith! Moving forward!

This time next year I want to be 40 lbs lighter and see a remarkable increase in my retail business. I know what I have to do…eat less, exercise more, pound the pavement to increase sales, work hard, and most importantly, rely on God to provide strength, confidence, and direction. Thank you, Sheila, for your reminder and inspiration!

Re: Long Obedience in the Same Direction. Yes. Finally discovered that book in the late 90's. Inspired worship directer and me to put all 15 Psalms of Ascents, virtually word for word, to original music. Is also what comes to mind every time I hike in our Adirondack mountains – the journey upward is full of sweat and challenge, but the payoff is that view at the summit. Would recommend Peterson's book to every Christian resolved to endure – living life worthy of the Gospel of Christ. Great post again, Sheila. Awesome reminder as we enter another new year.

Hi Sheila, THANK YOU for your blog post. I read it when you posted it it's just now having some impact, after much thought and prayer. I first saw you last year at Women of Faith in Philly and have been a huge fan ever since. Philly WoF was amazing again this year–can't wait for you to come back for next year. I love seeing your twitter posts–you're a big Mac/iphone geek like me. You have touched so many lives with stories of how God has come along side of you through everything–the great times, and times where you lose your footing and feel like life is completely out of control. I'm learning that every time–especially the hard ones–have divine purpose…and most of all, He wants us to know that He is with us and loves us–especially during those times. Thank you again for the words you write, and the your ministry. From a fellow musician, artist and Mac geek in the northeast. May God continue to bless you, that you may continue to bless others. Thank you so much. One thing to leave you with (since I noticed that you really do take the time to read these comments) — I found an amazing writing tool that I think you would love– there is http://www.ommwriter.com — Really helps to remove all distractions. And I love the aesthetic experience. Blessings, -lauren

Thank you for helping me focus ideas that I’ve had this new year. That photo at the end is just beautiful.

In 2011 I want to get back on the Mountain top. In the valleys I have learned so much and it has made me who I am today. As i focus my life on jesus in 2011 I want to come up higher and be a better person. Not for just myself but for others around me. I want to be the same on the inside as i am on the outside. Sometimes God brings us to a point of brokenness where we finally say, ok God, I am yours, i will now relax and allow you to do your work through me.
I am excited to be able to help with the Alpha course starting soon! I pray for new beginnings for so many and myself.
Thanks for your great post Shelia! We need to stay strong in a world that is hurting so much. You and WOF are so amazing!
    Blessings!

Just found you and glad I did! I love that quote/book title "A Long Obedience in the Same Direction" (Eugene Peterson, right?). It speaks so much of the small, daily choices and the eternal significance of them. We so often long for the dramatic, and we miss the opportunities to trust and serve and be faithful in the quiet grit of daily life.
